A Great Place to Live

From the DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER ..."Patuxent River (Naval Air Station) was established to serve as a facility for testing experimental airplanes, equipment and material, and as a NATS base..(Source) .

Patuxent River Naval Air Station was born of an effort to centralize widely dispersed air testing facilities established during the pre-World War II years.

Naval Air Station Patuxent River is located 65 miles southeast of Washington, DC on a peninsula that borders the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay, in historic St. Mary's County, Maryland. Located in the first county of Maryland where some of the first Europeans settled in the United States, the station is gifted with a variety of cultural and historic resources. These range from prehistoric through 19th century archaeological deposits to colonial through World War II architectural resources.

About Patuxent River, Maryland - (from The Patuxent River Civic Association Website) "…If you live near the Patuxent River East of route 301 and use the mailing address of Upper Marlboro you might consider using "Queen Anne’s Town" as your mailing address.

Our region has had several names in the past 300 years. Originally established on a tract known as Essington prior to 1694, the area became known as Queen Anne’s Town in 1706 and later became known as "Hardesty" then "Mitchellville" and in the 1960’s, until the present as Upper Marlboro.

Currently the area is "orphaned" with a postal address of Upper Marlboro (though not a part of the actual town) and near the City of Bowie (while not a part of that town either), Some Alexandria Drafting Company maps show the area as "Hardesty".

Queen Anne’s Town was created in 1706 by an act of "Her Majesty’s Governor Council and Assembly". On April 17, 1706 the act creating the town was signed into law by Governor John Seymour. There is no record that this act was ever repealed. This means that many of us are already living in or near Queen Anne’s Town without knowing it.
