Memorial Day Remembrance

Armed Forces Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who died in all wars.

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time. Another tradition is to fly the American flag from dawn until noon local time.

A National Memorial Day Concert takes place on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol each year. Music is performed and respect is paid to the men and women who died in war.

Memorial Day is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. Please take a moment this weekend to remember those who lost their lives in the service of our country.
